On a crisp November evening, the life of 22-year-old Antonio Maurice Taylor Jr., known affectionately to his friends and family as 'Juice,' was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. The young Black / African American man was out shopping with friends on November 23, 2021, at a Snipes store on West Saginaw Highway in Delta Township, just outside of Lansing, Michigan.
It was a place of ordinary, everyday activity that would become the backdrop for a devastating and sudden loss.
The day had been unremarkable until shortly after 5:30 p.m., when Willie James III, a 27-year-old from Lansing, opened fire inside the store. Antonio was struck by the gunfire. Despite the immediate response of medics who rendered first aid at the scene, his injuries were too severe. He was rushed to Sparrow Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his wounds, leaving a community and a loving family to grapple with the shock and sorrow of his absence. Those who knew him remembered a loyal and caring young man, the life of the party, whose vibrant smile and unique laughter would be deeply missed. He was a father, a son, a brother, and a friend whose concern for the well-being of his loved ones was a defining characteristic.
The investigation into Antonio's death quickly identified Willie James III as the perpetrator. He was apprehended approximately two weeks after the shooting. The legal proceedings that followed culminated in a four-day trial in May, where a jury found James guilty of second-degree murder and three weapons-related charges. On July 21, 2023, an Eaton County Circuit Judge sentenced him to a minimum of 70 years in prison, bringing a measure of justice to Antonio's grieving family, though the void left by his untimely death remains.
