In the early morning hours of December 10, 2021, the life of 17-year-old Arianna Christina Delacruz, a Hispanic female, was tragically cut short in Lansing, Michigan. A junior at Lansing Eastern High School with aspirations of becoming a hairstylist, she was known for her artistic talents and outgoing personality. On that fateful day, Arianna was on her way to a store to purchase diapers for a friend's baby when the vehicle she was in was targeted in a shooting.
The incident occurred around 4:15 a.m. near the intersection of South Cedar Street and East Miller Road. Multiple shots were fired into the SUV carrying Arianna and three other individuals: an 18-year-old female, a 16-year-old male, and an infant. Arianna was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene. The other three passengers sustained gunshot wounds but survived their injuries after being hospitalized. The violent act sent shockwaves through the community, marking the 35th homicide in the Lansing area that year.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation led Lansing Police to a suspect. Seventeen-year-old Lemmie Edward Jones of Lansing was arrested and subsequently arraigned in 54-A District Court. He faces a string of serious charges, including one count of open murder for the death of Arianna, four counts of assault with intent to murder for the injuries sustained by the other passengers, and two weapons-related charges, one of which is for the discharge of a weapon from a vehicle causing death.
Following a preliminary hearing, a judge determined there was sufficient evidence to order Lemmie Edward Jones to stand trial for the charges brought against him. The legal proceedings are a focal point for a community seeking justice for the untimely death of a young woman who had her entire future ahead of her. The case continues to move through the court system.
