In a heartbreaking turn of events, the life of 5-year-old Caleb Harris was brutally cut short in his Detroit, Michigan home. The young boy, a male, was discovered on a Sunday evening in February 2022, the victim of a triple homicide alongside his mother, 28-year-old Lashon Marshall, and her 32-year-old boyfriend, Aaron Benson. A concerned relative, unable to reach the family for some time, made the grim discovery after finding the back door of their Evergreen Road residence kicked in.
Inside the home, a horrific scene awaited. The bodies of Marshall and Benson were found, both having been shot to death. Tragically, as investigators continued to search the home, they found young Caleb in another room, also deceased. It was later revealed that the child had been shot multiple times in the face in what was described as an 'execution-style' killing. The bodies were believed to have been in the house for more than a day before being found.
The investigation into the senseless killings quickly led to two teenage suspects who were known to the victims. Following tips from the community, Detroit Police arrested the two individuals without incident. The primary suspect was identified as 16-year-old Malcolm Ray Hardy. It was alleged that Hardy was involved in delivering drugs for Benson. On the night of the murders, an altercation reportedly occurred between Hardy and Benson, during which Hardy is said to have used Benson's own gun to shoot him.
Following the initial shooting, Hardy then turned the weapon on Lashon Marshall and her son, Caleb. A friend of Hardy's later testified that Hardy confessed to the killings, stating he shot Caleb because he was afraid the young boy would 'snitch' on him. In total, Hardy fired 22 shots, with Caleb and Benson each being struck nine times, and Marshall four times.
Malcolm Ray Hardy was charged as an adult with three counts of second-degree murder and a gun charge. He pleaded guilty to the charges. In June 2024, he was sentenced to 28 to 60 years in prison for each of the three murder charges, with the sentences to run concurrently. He also received a two-year sentence for the gun charge, which he will serve before the murder sentences begin. The second teenage suspect who was arrested was not charged due to insufficient evidence.
