In the early morning hours of March 15, 2022, a fatal encounter unfolded at a Sunoco gas station on Ballenger Highway in Flint, Michigan, resulting in the death of 42-year-old Khogaly Mozzaffar. The incident, which involved a shooting, cut short the life of the male victim.
Following an investigation into the shooting, authorities arrested 25-year-old Markquail Jackson as the primary suspect. He was subsequently charged with open murder and carrying a firearm while committing a felony.
The case against Jackson proceeded to trial in January 2023. However, this initial legal proceeding did not reach a conclusive end, as the jury was unable to deliver a unanimous verdict, resulting in a mistrial.
Despite the initial setback, the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office decided to pursue the charges against Jackson for a second time. A new trial was set in motion, commencing in April 2025. The prosecution once again presented its case, arguing that Jackson was responsible for the death of Mozzaffar during an altercation at the gas station.
After the conclusion of the second trial, the jury deliberated on the evidence presented. In a decisive turn of events, Markquail Jackson was found not guilty of all charges, including open murder and the associated weapons charge. Following the acquittal, Jackson was released from custody, bringing a final, albeit controversial, end to the legal chapter of Khogaly Mozzaffar's death.
