A promising young life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence that continues to haunt his loved ones. Eyquan Cobb, a 21-year-old male, was killed in a drive-by shooting on the west side of Detroit on Friday, July 29, 2022. A student-athlete at Davenport University, Cobb was remembered by his family and the university community as a beacon of light with a constant smile.
Just days away from his 22nd birthday, Cobb was celebrating with friends inside an SUV on Stout
Street, not far from Thatcher Street. In a sudden and brutal turn of events, another vehicle pulled alongside and at least one person inside opened fire. As chaos erupted, Cobb attempted to flee the vehicle but was struck by gunfire in his lower back. He was found deceased in the driveway of a nearby home.
Eyquan, a Detroit native and a graduate of Detroit Central High School, was a defensive lineman for the Davenport University football team and was pursuing a degree in sports management. His coach, Sparky McEwen, described him as a hardworking student-athlete who was a committed teammate and a loyal friend. The university's athletic director, Paul Lowden, expressed heartbreak over the loss, calling Cobb an exemplary student-athlete who was a passionate contributor both on the field and in the classroom.
Despite the passage of time, no arrests have been made in connection with Eyquan Cobb's murder, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an open investigation. His family continues to plead for anyone with information to come forward, hopeful that justice will one day be served for the young man whose bright future was so violently extinguished. Their grief is compounded by the lack of closure as they continue to seek answers and accountability for his death.
