In the quiet community of Walled Lake, Michigan, a tragedy unfolded in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 11, 2022, resulting in the death of 56-year-old Tina Lanis. The incident, which also left her 25-year-old daughter seriously injured, was perpetrated by her husband, 53-year-old Igor Lanis.
The situation began to unravel around 4:00 a.m. when the couple's daughter placed a frantic 911 call, reporting that her father had shot both her and her mother.
When police arrived at the family's home on Glenwood Drive, they found a chaotic and dangerous scene. Igor Lanis emerged from the house armed with a shotgun and opened fire on the responding officers. A Walled Lake police officer and an Oakland County Sheriff's deputy returned fire, fatally wounding him.
Upon entering the home, authorities discovered Tina Lanis, who had been shot multiple times in the back as she apparently tried to flee. The family's dog had also been shot and killed. The injured daughter was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but was later upgraded to stable.
Investigations into the motive for the deadly rampage revealed a troubling backstory. According to the couple's younger daughter, who was not home at the time, her father had become increasingly consumed by QAnon conspiracy theories following the 2020 presidential election. She described a significant change in his personality, stating that he had become more irritable and paranoid as he delved deeper into these online beliefs. This obsession is believed to have been a major contributing factor in the violent outburst that claimed his wife's life and forever altered his family. As the perpetrator, Igor Lanis, was killed at the scene, there were no arrests or subsequent trial.
