In the early morning hours of October 19, 2019, the life of 37-year-old Christina K. Herren was brought to a sudden and violent end in her Gladwin, Michigan, home. The tragic events unfolded around 4 a.m. following a heated argument between Christina and her husband, Jeremy Herren. The couple's three children were in the house at the time and overheard the dispute, which tragically culminated in the sound of three gunshots.
Fearing for their mother's life, the children fled to a neighbor's house to call 911, telling dispatchers they believed their father had shot their mother.
Upon arriving at the residence on East Long Point Road, law enforcement officers were met with a tense standoff that lasted for nearly five hours. Jeremy Herren remained inside the house with his wife's body, refusing to come out. Authorities were finally able to apprehend him after he was drawn outside by the sound of his Jeep starting. Inside, they discovered Christina's body covered with blankets on the floor.
During questioning, Jeremy Herren recounted the events that led to the fatal shooting. He told investigators that he had been out at a bar with a friend the previous night and had fallen asleep on the couch upon his return. He claimed he was awakened by Christina pouring beer on his head and throwing the bottle at him, accusing him of infidelity and demanding he leave the house. Herren stated that he then retrieved and loaded a gun, though he claimed not to remember doing so. He admitted to shooting his wife but could not provide a reason for his actions. The couple had been together for 20 years.
Jeremy Herren, who was 39 at the time, was arrested and charged with homicide and felony firearm possession. In July 2020, he pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and firearm discharge in a building. The following month, he was sentenced to 31 to 50 years in prison for the murder of his wife. At his sentencing, Christina's sister delivered a victim's impact statement, expressing the profound loss her family had endured. For his part, Jeremy Herren expressed remorse, stating that he loved his wife and family and did not know why the tragedy had occurred.
