In the quiet setting of Rankin County, Mississippi, the life of Constable Jerry L. McCrory, a dedicated 35-year-old male law enforcement officer, was tragically cut short on a December day. On December 15, 1980, Constable McCrory was carrying out his duties, attempting to serve a warrant for disturbing the peace to a 70-year-old man at his residence.
As Constable McCrory approached the front of the house, having just parked his vehicle, the situation took a fatal turn.
When he was merely ten feet from the front door, it was suddenly flung open. The man inside, without warning, fired a 12-gauge shotgun, striking McCrory in the chest. The blast was immediate and devastating, ending the constable's life in a shocking act of violence.
The aftermath of the shooting saw the arrival of other officers at the scene. They were met with continued resistance from the shooter, forcing them to open fire and shoot the suspect twice before he could be taken into custody. Following his release from the hospital a week later, the 70-year-old man was officially charged with the capital murder of Constable Jerry McCrory.
The legal process moved forward, and on May 14, 1981, the suspect was convicted for the murder of the constable. He received a life sentence for his crime and was remanded to prison. The convicted killer remained incarcerated for the remainder of his life, ultimately dying in prison on March 4, 1988.
