In the pre-dawn chill of a January morning in Shannon, Mississippi, a long and respected career in law enforcement came to a sudden and violent end. Bobby Gene Spencer, the 58-year-old male Chief of Police, was ambushed and killed on January 18, 1997. A veteran of the United States Air Force who served in the Korean War, Chief Spencer had dedicated 20 years of his life to serving and protecting the community of Shannon.
On that frigid Saturday, at approximately 4:45 a.m., just as he was
about to conclude his shift, Chief Spencer was walking into the police department building when he was felled by a shot from a high-powered rifle. The attack was calculated, with the perpetrator having lain in wait in the darkness. Two of his own officers discovered their chief a short time later, initially believing he had suffered a heart attack. It was only upon further investigation that the grim reality of the ambush came to light.
