In the late afternoon of a Wednesday in Shannon, Mississippi, a story of fear and desperation culminated in the death of 22-year-old Naquaris Williams. The life of this young Black man was cut short on February 28, 2024, amidst a frantic search and a violent confrontation. Williams was born on March 13, 2001, in Columbus, Mississippi, and was known by those close to him for his warm smile and kind heart.
The tragic events began to unfold when the parents of a teenage girl received a
terrifying call from their daughter, claiming she had been kidnapped. Utilizing a location-tracking app, the frantic parents were able to trace their daughter's whereabouts. Their search led them to Washington Street in Shannon, where they found their daughter with Williams. It was in this moment of high tension and emotion that shots were fired.
When Shannon Police and Verona Police officers arrived at the scene around 3:10 p.m., they discovered Williams in a grassy area, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 4 p.m. The teenage girl was found physically unharmed.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, a suspect was taken into custody. Mario Dillard was subsequently charged with manslaughter in connection with the fatal shooting of Naquaris Williams. During his initial court appearance, Dillard's bond was set at $20,000. The investigation into the complex circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping and subsequent killing is ongoing.
