On April 3, 2020, tragedy struck in Independence, Missouri, when 21-year-old Nikolas Lampton was fatally shot outside an apartment complex. Lampton had traveled to the Sterling 24 Apartments located in the 300 block of Sundown Drive during the afternoon hours. Authorities later revealed that the meeting had been arranged over the social media application Snapchat, intended as a trade involving marijuana and cash in exchange for two firearms, specifically an assault rifle and a pistol.
Upon arrival, the transaction took a deadly turn. Surveillance footage from the area captured the encounter, showing Lampton interacting with a suspect identified by police as 18-year-old Jason A. Belshe Jr. According to prosecutors, the video depicts Lampton appearing to surrender by raising his hands and turning to walk away before the first shot was fired. As Lampton attempted to flee the scene, additional shots were discharged, striking him multiple times. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Following the investigation, law enforcement officers arrested Jason A. Belshe Jr. in connection with the homicide. During an interview with detectives, Belshe claimed he fired his weapon because he feared Lampton might pull a gun on him, despite the video evidence cited by prosecutors. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office subsequently charged Belshe with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and two counts of armed criminal action. Prosecutors requested a cash bond of $500,000 given the severity of the allegations. Lampton was remembered by his community and loved ones for his friendly nature and passion for hobbies such as refurbishing homes and working on cars.
