On April 3, 2020, tragedy struck in Independence, Missouri, when 21-year-old Nikolas Lampton was fatally shot outside an apartment complex. Lampton had traveled to the Sterling 24 Apartments located in the 300 block of Sundown Drive during the afternoon hours. Authorities later revealed that the meeting had been arranged over the social media application Snapchat, intended as a trade involving marijuana and cash in exchange for two firearms, specifically an assault rifle and a pistol.
