In the late summer of 2005, a tragic event unfolded in the small town of Crystal Springs, Mississippi, forever altering the community and the lives of those involved. On the evening of Saturday, August 13, 2005, Police Officer Timothy Lee Webster, a 32-year-old male, was on duty, having served with the Crystal Springs Police Department for just two months. A U.S.
Army veteran, Webster was committed to his new role of protecting and serving the residents of his town.
That night, Officer Webster conducted a vehicle stop on Jackson Street. As the vehicle came to a halt, a male occupant, later identified as Christopher Bridges, fled on foot. Webster immediately gave chase, pursuing the suspect to Kendall Lane. A struggle ensued between the two men, during which Bridges managed to gain control of Officer Webster's service weapon. Bridges then fired a single shot, striking Webster just above his bullet-resistant vest. The injury proved to be fatal.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Christopher Bridges escaped, prompting a manhunt. He was apprehended the following day. An investigation into the incident led to further arrests. Bridges' mother and another woman were taken into custody and charged with aiding a fugitive for their efforts to conceal him from law enforcement.
Christopher Bridges faced a capital murder charge for the death of Officer Timothy Lee Webster. In a trial held in Copiah County, a jury convicted him of the crime. Following the verdict, to avoid a potential death sentence, Bridges pleaded guilty to the charge on October 4, 2007. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
