On October 5, 2017, 29-year-old Crysta M. Proctor was tragically killed in a violent encounter in Casa Grande, Arizona. On that day, her estranged husband, Alec Javier Perez, and an accomplice, Rodney Ortiz Jr., arrived at her apartment. The violence began outside the residence where a man was shot. Perez then forcibly entered Proctor's home by kicking in the door.
Inside the apartment, the brutal assault continued, resulting in the deaths of Proctor and two of her friends, Connie
Carrera and Jose Martin Aguilera. Another man, Justin Allen Yates, was also killed in the incident. Proctor was stabbed, shot, and had her throat slit. The events of that day were the culmination of a history of domestic abuse that Proctor had endured.
In the months leading up to her death, Proctor had reported multiple instances of physical abuse by Perez to her probation officer. These incidents included a fractured elbow from a thrown glass candle, being punched, grabbed by the hair, thrown to the ground, and strangled. Despite her requests to relocate for her safety, she was denied permission to move. Following the quadruple homicide, Alec Javier Perez, then 31, and Rodney Ortiz Jr., 22, were arrested and faced four counts of first-degree murder.
