In the quiet town of Casa Grande, Arizona, a tragedy unfolded on April 30, 2018, forever altering the lives of one family. On that spring morning, neighbors were startled by the sound of gunshots emanating from a home on the 600 block of E. Judi Avenue. When police arrived shortly before 8:30 a.m., they discovered a grim scene inside. Twenty-seven-year-old Arielle Miller, a female, was found deceased from gunshot wounds.
The investigation soon revealed a devastating murder-suicide.
The person responsible for Arielle’s death was her own uncle, 56-year-old Rick Miller. Authorities determined that Rick had shot and killed Arielle and also fatally wounded her 31-year-old boyfriend, Kyle Cooper. After committing these violent acts, Rick Miller then turned the gun on himself, dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The motive behind this horrific act remains unclear, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden and senseless loss. Tragically, this was not the first time Arielle Miller had been confronted with gun violence. She was a survivor of the infamous 2012 mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. During that terrifying event, Arielle, who was an employee at the theater, acted with remarkable bravery, guiding customers to the safety of a locked manager's office and shielding them from the carnage.
Kyle Cooper, who was critically injured in the shooting, was initially transported to a Phoenix hospital. He fought for his life but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on May 2nd, becoming the third and final fatality in this tragic event. The Casa Grande Police Department confirmed that there were no outstanding suspects and that the community was not in any further danger.
