In the late hours of a November weekend in Casa Grande, Arizona, 17-year-old Hailey Stephens, a vibrant high school senior and cheerleader, attended a party at a vacant home that would tragically be her last. Around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 26, 2023, an altercation erupted among attendees, leading to a hail of gunfire. Hailey was struck in the head by a stray bullet. She was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and succumbed to her injuries later that evening.
Another 17-year-old girl was also wounded in the shooting, sustaining a non-fatal injury to her arm.
The senseless act of violence sent shockwaves through the Casa Grande community, prompting a swift and intensive investigation by the local police department. In the days that followed, law enforcement officials made a series of arrests, bringing several teenagers into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. The suspects included a 16-year-old male from Casa Grande and a 17-year-old male from Coolidge, who were among the first to be apprehended and faced charges of second-degree murder. The investigation continued to unfold, leading to more arrests as detectives pieced together the events of that tragic night.
As the legal process moved forward, the case saw a significant development when a 14-year-old boy was found guilty of second-degree murder in Hailey's death by a Pinal County juvenile court. Having been 13 at the time of the shooting, he was tried as a juvenile. In November 2024, the teenager was sentenced to be held in the custody of the Arizona Juvenile Corrections Department until 2027. Court records indicated he was found delinquent for multiple offenses, including second-degree murder, disorderly conduct with a weapon, and aggravated assault. While multiple individuals were arrested, he was the only one to face trial for her murder.
In the wake of their devastating loss, Hailey's family and the Casa Grande community came together to honor her memory. Described as a bright and promising young woman with a passion for cheerleading and a bright academic future, Hailey had been a senior at Casa Grande Union High School. Her family established the Hailey Lynn Stephens Foundation to provide college scholarships to students at her alma mater, turning their grief into a force for good. Vigils and memorial events were held, bringing together friends, family, and community members to remember a life cut short and to advocate for an end to senseless violence.
