In the quiet early morning hours of July 6, 2014, in Columbus, Mississippi, the life of 31-year-old Quinton Hill was irrevocably altered. A knock at the door of his Fourth Avenue South home just before 2:30 a.m. prompted him to respond. Tragically, as he went to answer, an assailant shot him through the closed door, the bullet striking him in the face at point-blank range.
The gunman then forced his way into the residence where another male was asleep on the living room couch.
The intruder, described as a Black male with his face concealed by a shirt or towel, proceeded to rob the second individual, demanding money before taking the wallets of both men and fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash. It remains unknown if the assailant left the scene on foot or in a vehicle. The uninjured victim inside the home immediately called 911 for help. Quinton Hill was initially rushed to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle before being airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson due to the severity of his injuries. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his wounds two days later, on July 8, 2014.
In the wake of his death, the community fondly remembered Hill, a longtime and beloved chef at the local Front Door/Back Door Restaurant. His former colleagues organized a fundraiser to support his family, which included his infant daughter. The Columbus Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and capture of the person responsible for this senseless act of violence.
Despite the initial investigation and public appeals for information, no arrests have been publicly announced in the years following Quinton Hill's death. The case has grown cold, leaving his family and community without closure. The identity of the man who ended the life of the cherished chef and young father remains a mystery, and the motive appears to be a robbery that escalated to a fatal shooting.
