In the late summer of 2014, the life of 17-year-old Katelyn Beard was tragically cut short in Jackson, Mississippi. The young woman, who was described by her mother as someone who loved meeting new people and would go to great lengths to make a friend, had recently connected with 19-year-old Dewayne Thompson online. Their acquaintance was brief, lasting no more than ten days before turning fatal.
On a Sunday in late August, an Amber Alert was issued for Katelyn after she was reported missing. Concerns for her safety were high, as evidence found at a residence in Jackson, including blood, indicated that a shooting had occurred and that she may have been seriously injured. The following day, her car was discovered abandoned in west Jackson. The investigation quickly pointed to Thompson, who was apprehended later that day in a vacant house nearby.
Initially, Thompson was charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, and auto theft. However, the search for Katelyn came to a heartbreaking end when her body was discovered in a rural area in Madison County. In a grim turn of events, Thompson himself assisted authorities in the search, ultimately leading them to where he had left her. Her body was found not far from a road, and it was apparent no attempt had been made to conceal it.
Following the discovery of Katelyn's body, the charges against Dewayne Thompson were upgraded to capital murder. While a definitive motive remained unclear to investigators, Thompson reportedly indicated that he and Katelyn had been consuming drugs together prior to her death. The coroner determined that her body had been in the location where it was found for approximately two days.
