In the summer of 2015, the life of 26-year-old Billy Ray Covington was tragically cut short in a violent encounter in Calhoun County, Mississippi. On July 11, 2015, Covington's body was discovered in a ditch, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The male victim was a resident of Big Creek, and his death marked a grim chapter in the otherwise quiet community.
The investigation into Covington's death led authorities to Frankie Terrell Jones.
The events leading to the fatal shooting began after an argument between the two men. The dispute reportedly started inside a vehicle before escalating to a physical fight outside. This altercation culminated in Jones shooting Covington multiple times. An eyewitness to the shooting later testified to seeing Jones shoot Covington in the back of the head as he was walking away, and then hearing several more gunshots.
Following the investigation, Frankie Terrell Jones was arrested on July 24, 2015, and subsequently indicted for the first-degree murder of Billy Ray Covington and for being a felon in possession of a firearm. In January 2017, a Calhoun County jury found Jones guilty on both counts after a trial that had commenced earlier that week.
Due to his status as a habitual offender, the court sentenced Jones to life in prison for the murder conviction and a concurrent ten-year sentence for the firearm charge. Jones later appealed his conviction, arguing that Black jurors had been improperly dismissed during the selection process. However, the Mississippi Supreme Court upheld the conviction in September 2018, finding no evidence to support the claim of racial discrimination in jury selection and affirming the original verdict.
