On April 16, 2014, in the small town of Nettleton, Mississippi, a violent altercation tragically cut short the life of 44-year-old Joseph Valie Bass. The day took a dark turn as Joseph, a male, was leaving the United Furniture plant where he worked, riding in a vehicle with his brother, Otis Eugene Bass, and two other men. An argument erupted within the confines of the car, setting off a chain of events that would leave three men dead.
The dispute escalated with terrifying speed as Otis
Bass, aged 49, produced a firearm and shot his brother Joseph and another passenger, Jamie C. Guin. Despite his injuries, Joseph attempted to flee the scene on foot, but his brother pursued him, continuing to fire. Witnesses reported the horrifying scene of Otis standing over his brother and firing multiple rounds, inflicting fatal gunshot wounds to his head and chest. Jamie Guin, who was not related to the brothers, was also critically wounded and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Tupelo.
The violence did not end there. When Nettleton police arrived at the scene, Otis Bass opened fire on them, striking their vehicle. The responding officer returned fire, killing Otis at the scene. The fourth man in the car, a family member, was unharmed and cooperated with the subsequent investigation conducted by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Mississippi Highway Patrol. As the perpetrator was killed at the scene, there were no further arrests or suspects in the case. The investigation concluded that the officer acted justifiably, bringing a tragic and violent episode to a close.
