Joseph Valie Bass, aged 44, tragically lost his life on April 16, 2014, in Nettleton, Mississippi. The incident occurred during a violent altercation involving his brother, Otis Eugene Bass, aged 49. The confrontation began inside a vehicle carrying Joseph, Otis, and two other men as they were leaving the United Furniture plant where they worked. An argument erupted between Otis and the other occupants, leading to Otis shooting Joseph and another passenger, Jamie C. Guin.
