In the small community of Carriere, Mississippi, a dispute over a mere $25 service fee escalated into a tragic act of violence that claimed the lives of 17-year-old Jacob McLemore and his father. On January 23, 2016, what should have been a routine business transaction at the McLemore Gun Shop turned into a fatal shootout, forever altering the lives of two families.
The incident began when Audy McCool, 52, and his son, Michael McCool, 29, arrived at the shop to retrieve a firearm that had been left for repair. An argument erupted with Jason McLemore's wife over the $25 charge for the work performed. The heated exchange prompted her to call her husband, 44-year-old Jason McLemore, who then arrived with their son, Jacob. The argument intensified and gunfire erupted. In the ensuing chaos, both Jason and Jacob McLemore were shot multiple times and died from their injuries. The McCools also sustained life-threatening gunshot wounds but survived.
The investigation that followed pieced together the harrowing events of that afternoon, leading to the arrest of the McCools. Michael McCool was ultimately charged with two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Jason and Jacob McLemore. He was found guilty and sentenced to two 40-year prison terms. His father, Audy McCool, faced legal consequences as well, convicted on two counts of being an accessory after the fact. He received a sentence of 14 years in custody, to be followed by six years of probation.
