In the quiet community of Carriere, Mississippi, the life of 13-year-old Peyton Ray O'Bryant was tragically cut short on March 31, 2020. A student at Pearl River Central Middle School, he was known for his love of the outdoors, particularly fishing and camping. Peyton, a male, was also a dedicated member of the JROTC with aspirations of enlisting in the military after completing his education.
On the evening of March 30, 2020, emergency services received a call just before 8:30 p.m. regarding a teenager with a head wound. Upon arrival, they discovered that O'Bryant had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. He was quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he was pronounced brain dead the following day. In the midst of their grief, his family made the compassionate decision to donate his organs, a choice that would offer a chance at life to others.
The investigation into the shooting swiftly led authorities to a suspect, another 13-year-old from Carriere, David Williams IV. Following an investigation by the Pearl River County Sheriff's Department that established probable cause, Williams was arrested on a warrant for second-degree murder. Due to a Mississippi statute concerning felonies committed with a deadly weapon by individuals aged 13 or older, Williams was charged as an adult. His case was sent directly to the 15th Circuit Court.
Following his arrest, an initial hearing was held for David Williams IV, where his bond was set at $150,000. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young life, remembered by his family and friends as a loving and caring individual who was always thinking of others.
