In the late summer of 2019, on his property near Carriere, Mississippi, the life of 68-year-old businessman Roland Von Kurnatowski came to a sudden and tragic end. A man of mixed European and Nicaraguan heritage, Von Kurnatowski was known for his entrepreneurial ventures, most notably his former ownership of the famed New Orleans music venue, Tipitina's. On the evening of Sunday, September 1st, he was alone, hunting the wild boar that had become a nuisance on his land. It was during this solitary activity that a single, fatal gunshot would conclude his story.
Concern arose when his wife, Mary, was unable to reach him. A family friend was dispatched to the property to check on his welfare and made the grim discovery. Von Kurnatowski was found with a gunshot wound to his chest. Investigators from the Hancock County Sheriff's Office were called to the scene to piece together the events of that evening. The initial assessment pointed towards a hunting accident. It was determined that Von Kurnatowski was climbing a ladder, his. 45 caliber rifle in hand, when the weapon discharged.
