The circumstances of her death led to the arrest of her estranged husband, George William Smith. Smith, who was 30 years old at the time of the sentencing, was accused of shooting McCarty in front of her children.
Initially indicted for first-degree murder, Smith later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. In addition to the manslaughter charge, he also pleaded guilty to two other counts. For the slaying of Samantha McCarty, George William Smith was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
