On October 4, 2016, a somber discovery was made at Presidential Hills Park in Jackson, Mississippi. As residents arrived at the park for their morning exercise along the walking track, they encountered the lifeless body of a man lying on the grounds. The victim was identified as Justin Jones, a 32-year-old Black male who had been at the location the previous evening.
Authorities determined that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and back, injuries that proved fatal.
The circumstances surrounding his death were particularly tragic given his reason for being at the park. Jones had attended a gathering the night before to mourn the loss of another homicide victim who had been killed just a week prior. It is believed that he never left the park after the vigil concluded, ultimately becoming a victim of violence himself in the very place where the community had gathered to grieve.
Jones was a well-known figure in his community, working as a funeral director for Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home, as well as a florist and hair stylist. He was remembered by friends and family as an adventurous and kind-hearted individual. Despite the investigation launched by the Jackson Police Department and appeals for information from Central Mississippi Crime Stoppers, the case proved difficult to solve. Years following the incident, reports indicated that it remained unknown who was responsible for the shooting, with rewards offered for information leading to an arrest, leaving the case open and his family without closure.
