In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Starkville, Mississippi, the life of Joseph Collier Tillman, a 21-year-old male student at Mississippi State University, was tragically cut short. On November 6, 2016, Tillman, a senior marketing major from Schlater, was in the Cotton District on Maxwell Street when he was fatally shot during what authorities have described as an attempted robbery. The incident occurred around 1:50 a.m., and by 2:30 a.m., an ambulance had been called to the scene near the StaggerIn Sports Grill, where Tillman was found in the yard of some apartments.
The investigation into Tillman's death moved swiftly, and a traffic stop later that same day led to the arrest of four individuals and the discovery of weapons in their vehicle. The suspects, all from the Columbus and Lowndes County area, were identified as 20-year-old Jaylen M. Barker, 22-year-old Jamario Pippins, 16-year-old Tyler Harris, and 19-year-old Brandon Sherrod. Barker was initially charged with murder, while Pippins, Harris, and Sherrod were charged as accessories. A fifth suspect, 18-year-old Syboris A. Pippins, was apprehended a few days later and initially charged with robbery.
As the legal proceedings unfolded, the charges against some of the suspects were upgraded. Both Jaylen M. Barker and Syboris A. Pippins had their charges elevated to capital murder, which made them eligible for the death penalty. The investigation revealed that Tillman had interacted with the group of men for several minutes before he was robbed of his wallet and then shot. In a significant development in April 2019, Jaylen Barker pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. He admitted in court to killing Joseph Tillman and was subsequently sentenced to life in the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
