In the quiet community of Saucier, Mississippi, the life of 75-year-old Willis Michael Cassidy, Jr. came to a violent end in April 2017. What initially appeared to be a death by gunshot was later determined by the coroner to be a brutal beating. The investigation into his death quickly focused on his live-in caregiver, Gabriel Benjamin Curtis, who was 39 at the time.
The case began to unfold when a relative of Curtis contacted the Harrison County Sheriff's Department after Curtis reportedly confessed to the killing during a Facebook chat.
When deputies arrived at Cassidy's home on Pine Bark Lane to perform a welfare check, they discovered a grisly scene. There were drag marks leading from the master bedroom, blood spatter on a wall, and blood-soaked blankets. They also found more blood in the master bathroom and a dead dog. During the investigation at the home, Curtis returned in Cassidy's car. He confessed to the deputies that he had killed his roommate and disposed of the body, leading them to a wooded area in Jackson County where they found Cassidy's nude body. Initially, Curtis claimed he had shot Cassidy, but an autopsy revealed no gunshot wounds. The cause of death was determined to be blunt-force trauma to the head, neck, and back, and evidence suggested he had been beaten with a revolver. Investigators also found a tarp and bloody clothing belonging to Cassidy inside his car.
Gabriel Benjamin Curtis was arrested and charged with murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. During his trial, Curtis testified in his own defense, claiming he acted in self-defense after Cassidy, who he described as being in poor health, pulled a gun on him during an argument. Curtis admitted to hitting Cassidy multiple times with the gun and strangling him. He alleged that Cassidy was verbally abusive and had made unwanted sexual advances. The prosecution argued that it was a deliberate and prolonged assault, not self-defense. In October 2018, a Harrison County jury deliberated for about three hours before finding Curtis guilty of first-degree murder. He was also found guilty of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
Following the guilty verdict, Judge Christopher Schmidt sentenced Gabriel Curtis to life in prison for the murder of Willis Cassidy Jr. He also received a ten-year sentence for the firearm charge, to be served concurrently with his life sentence. Curtis later appealed his conviction, arguing that the jury should have been allowed to consider lesser offenses. In June 2020, the Mississippi Court of Appeals affirmed the original verdict, ensuring that Curtis would remain imprisoned for the brutal killing of the elderly man he was supposed to be caring for.
