In a tragic turn of events stemming from a domestic dispute, Carl Tyrone Fair Jr., a 25-year-old Black man from Laurel, Mississippi, was shot and killed on September 3, 2017. The incident unfolded at the West Hill Apartments on West 10th Street in Laurel, where police responded to a distress call from a woman reporting that her ex-boyfriend was attempting to force his way into her apartment.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Fair on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The subsequent investigation swiftly led to the identification and arrest of 22-year-old Justin Glenn, also of Laurel. It was determined that Fair was the current boyfriend of Glenn's ex-girlfriend. The motive for the shooting appeared to be rooted in this domestic conflict, as Glenn had allegedly gone to the apartment to confront his ex-girlfriend and encountered Fair instead.
Initially, Glenn was charged with Burglary to an Occupied Dwelling and Capital Murder and was facing the possibility of the death penalty. However, in November 2020, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder. The victim's family reportedly approved of the plea agreement. A judge sentenced Glenn to 30 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections, to be followed by five years of post-release supervision. During the sentencing, the judge noted that Glenn had been given an opportunity to walk away from the situation earlier in the evening when police had previously responded to a disturbance at the same location. Body-cam footage from the earlier encounter showed Glenn being instructed to leave the premises. He returned a short time later, leading to the fatal confrontation.
