A promising future was tragically cut short on a Saturday morning in Horn Lake, Mississippi. Jaquarius Harper, a 17-year-old male, was fatally shot on September 30, 2017. At the time of his death, Harper was a senior at Lake Cormorant High School and a talented football player with a bright future, reportedly in talks with college scouts.
The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. in the 5200 block of Longwood Cove, located in the Twin Lakes subdivision.
When Horn Lake police officers arrived at the scene, they found Harper with a gunshot wound. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the initial investigation, evidence suggested that the shooting was a tragic accident. Police believed that several juveniles may have been playing with a loaded handgun when it discharged. The single shot not only struck and killed Harper but also injured another 17-year-old. The second teenager was hit in the arm and transported to Regional One in Memphis in non-critical condition.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, authorities stated that no charges had been filed. The investigation was ongoing at the time, with police looking into the circumstances that led to the fatal incident. Information regarding any subsequent arrests, suspects, or progression of the case has not been made publicly available. Jaquarius was remembered by his family and community, with funeral services held the following week. He was survived by his parents, a sister, and two brothers.
