In the spring of 2018, the community of Louisville, Mississippi, was shaken by the violent death of 17-year-old Tylan Mikel Glenn. On the night of Saturday, March 24, 2018, Tylan, a Black male, was fatally shot multiple times at close range while sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle in the Mount Moriah Circle neighborhood. At the time of the incident, a female was in the driver's seat, and her young child was in the back.
The shooting was not a random act of violence but was believed to be the result of a domestic dispute that escalated to a tragic extreme. Tylan was a student at Louisville High School, where he was known as a gifted and smart child on track to graduate a semester early.
The investigation quickly identified a suspect, 20-year-old Isaiah Riggins, who was the father of the child in the vehicle. Riggins allegedly approached the passenger side of the car and fired multiple shots from a 9mm handgun, striking Tylan. Law enforcement recovered a 9mm handgun and spent shell casings at the scene. Following the shooting, Riggins fled and remained at large for five days before surrendering to authorities in Georgia. Another individual, 19-year-old Jordan Miller, was also arrested and charged with Accessory After the Fact of Murder, though these charges were later reported to have been dropped.
Isaiah Riggins was initially charged with the murder of Tylan Glenn. In November 2019, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Tylan's mother expressed outrage at the sentencing, believing that Riggins should have been convicted of first-degree murder and received a life sentence. She alleged that the prosecution was hesitant to go to trial due to mishandled evidence by the Louisville Police Department, including misplaced shell casings from the crime scene. She felt that the justice system had failed her son and that the sentence did not reflect the gravity of the crime. The tragic death of Tylan Glenn left a lasting impact on his family, friends, and the Louisville community, highlighting the devastating consequences of gun violence.
