On the evening of May 31, 2018, a violent incident occurred at a Gulf gas station located at 352 Woodrow Wilson Avenue in Jackson, Mississippi. The victim, 25-year-old Roddrick Jackson, a Black male, was found unresponsive in the parking lot of the business. Officers from the Jackson Police Department arrived at the scene shortly after 9:00 p.m. to discover that Jackson had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the emergency response, he succumbed to his injuries, marking a tragic loss for his community and family.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a dark-colored SUV speeding away from the gas station immediately following the shooting. Law enforcement officers quickly mobilized to locate the fleeing vehicle. A short time later, a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's SUV was involved in a crash not far from the crime scene. The driver attempted to evade capture by fleeing on foot, but police were able to apprehend him quickly.
The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Devan Robinson. Following his arrest, Robinson was taken into custody and originally charged with capital murder in connection with Roddrick Jackson's death. Authorities also levied additional charges against him, including possession of a stolen firearm and later records indicated a charge of second-degree arson. In the days following the arrest, the primary charge was reportedly adjusted to murder, and Robinson was held without bond pending his initial court appearance. The investigation revealed that the shooting happened after hours at the station, though a specific motive was not immediately released to the public.
