In the summer of 2018, a domestic disturbance call to 911 in Meridian, Mississippi, unveiled a tragedy that would end the life of 34-year-old Marsha Danielle Pace. On the evening of June 15th, deputies arriving at a residence on Brown Hooke Road discovered Marsha unresponsive with a gunshot wound to her head. She was rushed to Rush Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The immediate investigation into the violent altercation led to the arrest of her husband, 31-year-old Truitt Thomas Pace.
Initially, Truitt Pace claimed he had punched his wife during an argument, but later admitted to the 911 dispatcher that he had shot her in the head. He was at first charged with second-degree murder, professing that the shooting was an accident and that he had only intended to fire a warning shot. However, as the investigation deepened, a history of escalating domestic violence between the couple came to light. This evidence, coupled with the findings of the autopsy which revealed Marsha had been beaten before the shooting, led a grand jury to indict Truitt on the more severe charge of first-degree murder in August 2019. The couple's 9-year-old daughter was present in the home at the time of the incident but was physically unharmed.
The legal proceedings that followed were drawn out, marked by delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and changes within the public defender's office. During the trial, which commenced in December 2021, the prosecution painted a grim picture of the events that transpired on that fatal night. They presented evidence showing that Truitt had shot Marsha in the back of the head from a distance of more than two to three feet. The autopsy photos displayed in court showed that Marsha had suffered blunt force trauma, including black eyes and abrasions, indicating a physical assault prior to the gunshot.
On December 16, 2021, a jury found Truitt Thomas Pace guilty of first-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison. The trial was an ordeal for Marsha's family, who had to endure the graphic and emotional testimony detailing her final moments. Marsha was remembered as a loving mother and a dedicated employee in the Labor and Delivery department at Rush Hospital.
