In the early morning hours of July 1, 2018, a dispute in a Columbus, Mississippi apartment complex parking lot turned fatal, ending the life of 21-year-old Adarious O’Neal. The young Black man was shot during an altercation at The Reserve Apartments on 31st Avenue North at approximately 2 a.m.
Following the shooting, O’Neal was transported by a private vehicle to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at roughly 2:40 a.m.
The Lowndes County Coroner confirmed his identity and an autopsy was ordered to be completed later that week. Another individual at the scene sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
In the immediate aftermath, the Columbus Police Department stated that while no suspect was in custody, their initial investigation suggested that O’Neal and the person who shot him were acquainted. Authorities appealed to the public for any information regarding the shooting, encouraging witnesses to contact the Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers.
Despite the initial belief that the shooter was known to the victim, there have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the killing of Adarious O’Neal. The case remains unresolved, with no available information on any criminal investigations, arrests, or legal proceedings that have taken place in the years following his death.
