In the early morning hours of April 24, 2022, the life of 15-year-old Harvey Montrell Johnson Jr. was cut short in Columbus, Mississippi. The male teenager was behind the wheel of a car that police initially found in a ditch off Highway 182, riddled with bullet holes. Johnson was discovered unconscious and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Johnson's death quickly led police to the 100 block of Poplar Street, just a short distance from where the crashed car was
found. It was there that the events that culminated in the teenager's demise began to unfold. Investigators determined that an altercation had taken place, followed by gunfire. Johnson was shot on Poplar Street and then drove away before his vehicle came to a stop in the nearby ditch.
A passenger in Johnson's car, 27-year-old Tommy Lee Flowers, was initially taken into custody on a charge of possession of a stolen firearm. However, as the investigation progressed, his role in the fatal incident became clearer. Authorities revealed that Flowers had instigated a retaliatory shooting, stemming from a previous 'street beef' in which he had been shot. On the day of the incident, Flowers had been with Johnson, consuming alcohol and drugs before providing him with a firearm to carry out a shooting into a residence on Poplar Street. It was during this act that Johnson was fatally wounded by someone other than Flowers.
Although Flowers did not fire the shot that killed Johnson, he was charged with second-degree murder under the principle of accomplice liability, as he was involved in the commission of a felony that resulted in a death. His charges were later upgraded, and in February 2024, a Lowndes County jury found Tommy Lee Flowers guilty of felony murder, three counts of aggravated assault, directing a juvenile to commit a felony, and shooting into a dwelling. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison plus 80 years. The case highlighted the legal ramifications for those who involve juveniles in criminal activities, leading to tragic outcomes. A week after the fatal shooting, police were called back to the same home on Poplar Street for another shooting incident, which was investigated as a possible retaliation.
