In the late summer of 2018, the community of Philadelphia, Mississippi, was shaken by a violent act that claimed the life of 27-year-old Megan Elizabeth Staats. On Saturday, August 25, 2018, Staats was working as a store clerk at a Cefco gas station when a robbery turned deadly. A man, later identified as 30-year-old Robert Leon Jackson, entered the establishment and held Staats at gunpoint before fatally shooting her.
