In the late summer of 2018, the community of Philadelphia, Mississippi, was shaken by a violent act that claimed the life of 27-year-old Megan Elizabeth Staats. On Saturday, August 25, 2018, Staats was working as a store clerk at a Cefco gas station when a robbery turned deadly. A man, later identified as 30-year-old Robert Leon Jackson, entered the establishment and held Staats at gunpoint before fatally shooting her.
The tragic event did not end with Staats' death.
After killing the young mother, Jackson exited the gas station and was confronted by a customer, Jeremy Apperson, who was defending his wife and child. An exchange of gunfire in the parking lot resulted in Apperson also being killed. As Jackson attempted to flee the scene, multiple other people drew their weapons and fired at him. A third person was shot during the chaos but was able to drive himself to the hospital.
Law enforcement launched an immediate investigation, and their efforts quickly led to the apprehension of the suspect. Robert Leon Jackson was located and arrested in the breezeway of a nearby hotel shortly after the incident. He was subsequently charged with capital murder for the deaths of both Megan Staats and Jeremy Apperson.
In February 2020, Robert Leon Jackson pleaded guilty to all seven charges brought against him, including two counts of capital murder. The plea brought a conclusion to the legal proceedings, with Jackson being sentenced to two life sentences without the possibility of parole, in addition to 90 years. The resolution in court offered a measure of justice for the families of the victims and a community still mourning the senseless loss of two of its own.
