In the quiet Chateau Ridge subdivision of Olive Branch, Mississippi, a dispute escalated into deadly violence on the evening of April 1, 2019, claiming the lives of two young men. Rodney Clark, a 20-year-old male, and 17-year-old Chavez Aldridge were found shot in two separate house lots and were pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses reported that a fight in the street preceded the sound of gunfire.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led law enforcement to three
suspects from Memphis, Tennessee. Darius Wayne, Kalani Tia Pula, and Az-Hakim Oliver were taken into custody in Memphis after investigators tracked a vehicle with a New York license plate to an apartment complex. All three were charged with two counts of murder. The motive for the shooting was believed to be a disagreement over a previous gun trade between Wayne and Rodney Clark.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a partial resolution to the case. In a five-day trial that began on October 5, 2020, Darius Wayne was tried alongside his co-defendants, Az-Hakim Oliver and Kalani Tiapula. Wayne testified that he shot Shavez Aldridge in self-defense. Ultimately, the jury found Darius Wayne guilty of the first-degree murder of Shavez Aldridge and sentenced him to life in prison. However, Wayne was found not guilty of the murder of Rodney Clark. Az-Hakim Oliver and Kalani Tiapula were found not guilty on all counts.
