In the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2021, a dispute that began with texted insults escalated into a tragic triple homicide in Olive Branch, Mississippi, claiming the life of 33-year-old Tyler Glen Liles. The violence also resulted in the deaths of Tommi Lynn Carrier, 40, and John Lennon Sutherland, 30. Liles, a U.S. National Guard veteran who had served a tour in Iraq, was remembered as an avid golfer and fisherman.
The events leading to the fatal encounter began with an argument between Dylan Howard and his on-and-off girlfriend, who was the daughter of Tommi Carrier. After Howard dropped her off at her mother's home, he and Liles, who was dating Carrier, exchanged taunts through text messages. Around 1:00 a.m., Liles sent Howard a message, to which Howard responded, 'Drop your location.' Howard and a friend, Ivan Rodriguez, then drove to Olive Branch to confront Liles.
Upon their arrival, an altercation ensued. Though Liles was unarmed, Rodriguez fired multiple shots, killing Liles, Carrier, and Sutherland. An investigation quickly led police to Rodriguez, then 26, and Howard. Rodriguez was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
In January 2023, a DeSoto County jury convicted Rodriguez on the lesser charges of one count of manslaughter for the death of Liles and two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Carrier and Sutherland. In March 2023, he was sentenced to a total of 60 years in prison. The sentence consists of 20 years for manslaughter to be served consecutively with two concurrent 40-year sentences for the second-degree murder convictions. Dylan Lee Howard was also charged in connection with the triple homicide and was sentenced to five years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. During the sentencing, family members of the victims expressed their profound grief, with some calling for a harsher sentence while another expressed forgiveness.
