In the evening hours of a late November day in West Point, Mississippi, the life of 40-year-old Jamel Banks Sr. was tragically cut short. On November 25, 2019, Banks was found by his mother in the front yard of her Lowe Street home with multiple gunshot wounds. First responders were called to the scene around 5:35 p.m., but Banks was pronounced dead at his residence.
The West Point Police Department, with assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, immediately began a
homicide investigation into the shooting. Banks, a father of three who was self-employed as the owner of a detail shop, was described by his family as a man with no known enemies, leaving them shocked and searching for answers. His body was sent to the state crime lab in Pearl for an autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation.
A year after the fatal shooting, the investigation into Jamel Banks's murder remained open, but authorities had hit significant roadblocks. Police and Banks's grieving family held a press conference on the one-year anniversary of his death, pleading with the public for any information that might lead to the arrest of the person or persons responsible. Investigators lamented the lack of credible witnesses and promising leads, stating that fear of being labeled a 'snitch' was a major barrier to people coming forward. Despite their pleas and a reward of up to $5,000 offered by Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest, the case has grown cold. To date, there have been no arrests made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the murder of Jamel Banks. The case officially remains unsolved.
