In the small town of Butler, Mississippi, the holiday season of 2019 was irrevocably marked by violence and loss. On the evening of December 2nd, just before 9 p.m., the sense of peace at the Bedford Pines Apartments on Vanity Fair Drive was shattered by a fatal gunshot. Brandon Howard, a 33-year-old Black male, was killed in what authorities have described as a robbery that turned deadly.
The incident sent shockwaves through the community and launched an intensive investigation by the Butler Police Department and the Choctaw County Sheriff's Department.
The investigation into Howard's death moved swiftly, and within a short period, law enforcement officials had multiple suspects in custody. Ollie Curtis III, 23 years old at the time, and 19-year-old Ter'rion Dunn were both apprehended and faced the grave charge of capital murder. Curtis was taken into custody in Butler, while Dunn's arrest occurred in Huntsville. The scope of the alleged conspiracy widened with the arrests of 18-year-old LaJasmine Luckett and a 14-year-old female, both charged with conspiracy to commit robbery. Luckett was transported to the Marengo County Jail, while the juvenile was held in a youth facility. A fifth individual, 29-year-old Santerrieo Young, was later arrested and charged with hindering prosecution, further deepening the complexity of the case.
While the initial arrests seemed to bring a sense of resolution, the narrative surrounding the death of Brandon Howard grew more intricate. Questions emerged about the involvement of at least one of the accused. The mother of Ter'Rion Dunn, Kimkeshia Johnson-Byron, began a public campaign asserting her son's innocence, claiming he was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. This alternate perspective suggests that Dunn was visiting Howard when Ollie Curtis III allegedly arrived to commit the robbery. According to this account, a struggle ensued between Curtis and Howard, leading to the fatal shot, after which Curtis allegedly threatened Dunn. These claims have cast a shadow of doubt and raised questions about the precise events that transpired on that tragic December night, leaving a community to grapple with a story that may be far more complex than it first appeared.
