In the winter of 2020, a young man's life was cut short in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Jamara Quadracus Drake Edwards, a 25-year-old male, was fatally shot on January 12 in the 1300 block of Corinne Street. The incident marked another grim statistic in the city's struggle with gun violence. Known to his loved ones as 'Drake,' his sudden and violent death left a void in the community.
The investigation into Edwards' death moved swiftly, and within days, law enforcement officials had
suspects in custody. Five days after the shooting, two juveniles, a 16-year-old male from Hattiesburg and a 15-year-old female from Gulfport, were apprehended in Gulfport. Their alleged involvement led to charges of capital murder. These charges were not the end of their legal troubles, as they both later faced additional charges of aggravated assault.
A third teenager, 17-year-old Darrell Smith of Hattiesburg, was also implicated in the murder and faced a charge of capital murder. The severity of the crime prompted the decision to charge all three teenagers as adults, signaling the gravity of the accusations against them.
On the same morning of Edwards' death, another shooting occurred in a nearby, though unrelated, incident. This led to the arrest of 18-year-old Kendrick McDuffie of Hattiesburg, who was charged with aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit a felony. Investigators believe that Smith and the two juveniles charged in Edwards' murder were also involved in this separate shooting incident, further complicating the violent events of that day.
