In the early hours of August 4, 2024, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, 31-year-old Markaz Moye was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. in the 600 block of Eastside Avenue. When Hattiesburg Police officers arrived at the scene, they found Moye suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Some initial reports indicated the shooting may have occurred near the intersection of West 5th Street and North 25th Avenue.
Following an investigation into the shooting, authorities arrested 36-year-old Gary Christopher Rogers of Hattiesburg. Rogers was subsequently charged with one count of First Degree Murder and Tampering with Physical Evidence in connection with Moye's death. He was then booked into the Forrest County Jail.
While an arrest has been made, the Hattiesburg Police Department has stated that the investigation remains active and ongoing. Law enforcement has urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and contact either the Hattiesburg Police Department or Crime Stoppers, where anonymous tips can be submitted. The lack of eyewitnesses and limited physical evidence were initially described as challenges in the case.
