A sense of duty and a desire to help others defined the life of 65-year-old Browning Luckett Jr., and it was this commitment that placed him in the path of a fatal encounter on the morning of February 19, 2020. A security guard at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, Luckett was known for his commanding presence and an outgoing, friendly personality.
Those who knew him said he never met a stranger and often wore a big smile, qualities that belied the seriousness with which he approached his work and his role as a protector.
On that Wednesday morning, a domestic dispute escalated in the hospital's parking lot. A man confronted Christina Deloris Davis, a 32-year-old hospital employee, as she arrived for work. The confrontation turned violent, and Luckett, true to his nature, intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and protect Davis. The assailant, who was identified as Davis's boyfriend, then pulled out a gun and fatally shot both Luckett and Davis.
The shooter fled the scene in Davis's vehicle, leaving a community in shock and a hospital campus transformed into a crime scene. The search for the suspect was brief. Less than two hours after the shooting, his body was found in a cemetery in the nearby city of Pearl. He had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Davis's car was discovered near the cemetery, bringing a tragic end to the violent episode. In the wake of the tragedy, those who knew Browning Luckett Jr. remembered him as a hero who gave his life in an act of selfless courage, a man who stood as a source of strength for others until his final moments.
