In a tragic turn of events on a Monday afternoon in South Columbus, Mississippi, a young man's life was cut short. Xavier Johnson, a 20-year-old male, was fatally shot on April 20, 2020. The incident unfolded in the 500 block of 16th Avenue South shortly after 1 p.m., where an argument escalated to a fatal conclusion. First responders arrived to find Johnson in the street and immediately attempted life-saving measures, but their efforts were in vain.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a person of interest. The following day, police arrested 18-year-old Tyler Blair Blackwell of Columbus. Authorities revealed that Johnson and Blackwell were acquainted and had engaged in a dispute just before the shooting occurred. The motive for the deadly confrontation was later described as a drug deal that had gone wrong.
Initially, Blackwell was charged with murder in connection with Johnson's death. In May 2022, a Lowndes County grand jury returned a murder indictment against him. However, the legal proceedings took a different direction. In November 2024, Tyler Blair Blackwell, then 23, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Following his plea, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the death of Xavier Johnson. The sentence, delivered by Circuit Judge Michelle Easterling, includes the possibility of parole.
