Marquis Bell, a 23-year-old Black / African American male, was killed on August 8, 2020, during a confrontation at the Sinclair Crossing Apartments on Bailey Avenue in Jackson, Mississippi. The shooting unfolded shortly after noon, with police reports placing the incident at approximately 1 p.m. Bell was inside a vehicle with Robneisha Parker when 26-year-old Landius Holmes arrived at the apartment complex.
According to the account released by Jackson police, Holmes confronted and attacked Parker. Bell got out or otherwise moved to assist Parker, and the confrontation suddenly turned deadly when Holmes allegedly opened fire on Bell. Bell was struck multiple times and died from his injuries at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath, Jackson police identified Holmes as the suspected gunman and publicly sought him in connection with the killing. Early reports described Holmes as being at large while detectives investigated what had begun as an altercation and escalated into gunfire. That changed the following day. Police announced that Holmes surrendered himself to authorities, and contemporaneous news reports stated that he was charged with murder in Bell's death. Later public reporting, however, created a significant discrepancy concerning the status of the suspect. In March 2022, while participating with the group Mothers of Murdered Sons, Tripp said that no arrest had been made in her son's case, and another report from the same period described her as saying that his killer had not been captured. Those statements conflict with the Jackson Police Department's August 2020 announcement and multiple contemporaneous news reports stating that Landius Holmes surrendered and was charged with murder. The publicly available reports reviewed do not explain whether Holmes was subsequently released, whether the charge was dismissed or otherwise disposed of, or why Bell's family later characterized the case as one in which the killer had not been captured.
Bell's death remained part of the broader public conversation about gun violence in Jackson. His mother became involved with Mothers of Murdered Sons, joining other families who placed victims' faces on billboards and called for witnesses and authorities to help bring unresolved killings to a conclusion. Bell continued to be remembered by his family years after the shooting; photographs published in September 2026 showed Tripp with pictures of her son at her home in Pearl, Mississippi.
