In the late summer of 2021, a terrible event unfolded in the small community of Sarah, Mississippi. On August 30th, 44-year-old Carol Mouton Rayam, a woman known for her outgoing and caring nature, lost her life in a violent encounter. She was a mother, survived by her daughter, Alexandria Rayam, and was a cherished sister and daughter. Her sudden death left her family and all who knew her in deep mourning.
The circumstances of Carol's death were especially tragic as the investigation
soon pointed to a suspect from within her own family. Her father, Forrest Joseph Mouton, who was 71 years old at the time, was identified as the person responsible for her fatal shooting. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement began their work, and Mouton was taken into custody, initially held without bond at the Tate County Jail. The charge brought against him was severe: first-degree murder. This development sent a shockwave through the community, as a father was accused of taking his own daughter's life.
As the case proceeded through the legal system, the initial charge against Forrest Mouton was amended. In May of 2023, at the age of 73, he appeared in Tate County Circuit Court and pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of second-degree murder. Following his plea, he was sentenced to serve a term of 40 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. This conviction brought a measure of closure to a case that had undoubtedly caused immense pain and sorrow to the family, who had lost a loved one in such a devastating manner.
