Nila Marie Stennis, a 23-year-old female, was tragically killed on November 27, 2022, following a dispute with her boyfriend. The events of that night began in Gulfport, Mississippi, where Stennis and her boyfriend, Deondrick Mychahl Jones, had gone to a bar and later to the Island View Casino. Surveillance footage captured the couple at both locations, and evidence of a heated argument between them was observed at the casino before they departed.
The conflict escalated as they were
driving on Interstate 10. After Stennis stopped the car, Jones shot her multiple times. He then left her body on the interstate, where she was subsequently struck by an 18-wheeler. After the shooting, Jones fled the scene in Stennis's vehicle, heading to Jackson.
Law enforcement later arrested Deondrick Mychahl Jones in connection with the death of Nila Stennis. During his trial, Jones claimed that he acted in self-defense, alleging that Stennis had come at him with a knife. However, the prosecution successfully argued that his actions were 'cold, callous and calculated.' They presented evidence that he shot her in the head and back. A knife was found approximately 10 to 20 feet from her body, which prosecutors suggested Jones may have planted to support his self-defense claim.
The jury deliberated for less than two hours before finding Deondrick Mychahl Jones guilty of first-degree murder and taking a motor vehicle. For the murder conviction, he was sentenced to life in prison. He received an additional five-year sentence for the vehicle theft, which is to be served concurrently with his life sentence. During the sentencing, Nila's mother spoke of the profound grief her family continues to endure as a result of her daughter's 'tragic and senseless death' at the hands of a man who had once been close to their family.
