In the fall of 2021, a young Black man named Eric Damante Jackson tragically lost his life in a burst of violence in Jackson, Mississippi. At 21 years old, his future was abruptly cut short on the evening of October 14, 2021. The fatal encounter unfolded at a One Stop gas station, a familiar landmark at the intersection of Raymond Road and Shady Lane.
It was here that Jackson was shot multiple times, his death later confirmed by the Hinds County Coroner, Sharon Grisham-Stewart, as a result of the multiple gunshot wounds he sustained.
The investigation into the shooting suggested a motive rooted in retribution. Law enforcement officials believed the incident was not a random act of violence but rather an act of retaliation, possibly stemming from a previous dispute that had escalated with deadly consequences. This theory gained traction as the Jackson Police Department swiftly moved forward with their investigation, quickly identifying a person of interest. Within a remarkably short period, their efforts led to a significant development in the case.
Just two days after the shooting, on October 16, 2021, authorities apprehended a suspect. Alonte Davis-Anderson, 26 years old at the time, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the murder of Eric Damante Jackson. The arrest brought a measure of resolution to a community shaken by the violence, as the case began its journey through the legal system. Davis-Anderson was set to face first-degree murder charges, with the prosecution prepared to argue that the shooting was a deliberate and premeditated act. The swift arrest underscored the diligent work of the Jackson Police Department in their pursuit of justice for Jackson and his grieving family.
