In a tragic turn of events stemming from a dispute over vehicle repairs, 40-year-old Emael Sims of Gulfport, Mississippi, lost his life. On a Monday afternoon in January 2022, what began as a disagreement escalated into a fatal shooting. Sims was shot multiple times and died at the scene on Jeff Road near Rippy Road.
The man authorities identified as the shooter was 73-year-old Ambrose 'Mr. Charlie' Charles, also of Gulfport.
According to reports, Sims was upset with the amount of time Charles was taking to complete bodywork on a vehicle. Witnesses reported hearing the two men arguing before the sound of gunshots filled the air. Sims was unarmed during the confrontation.
Following the shooting, Gulfport police responded to 911 calls and located Charles in the vicinity. When officers confronted him, Charles allegedly fired his weapon at them, and the officers returned fire. Charles then fled into a nearby wooded area. As an officer pursued him, they witnessed Charles take his own life with a single gunshot to the head.
Due to the involvement of police officers in the exchange of gunfire, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was brought in to conduct an independent investigation, a standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. The investigation aimed to clarify the full sequence of events, including a forensic examination to confirm the origin of the fatal shot that killed Charles.
