In the early morning hours of June 7, 2022, the life of 26-year-old Terrencia Jackson, a Black female, was tragically cut short in her Jackson, Mississippi home on Fleetwood Drive. Jackson and her new boyfriend were in bed when her ex-boyfriend, Zverian Brent, forced his way into the residence. A confrontation ensued, and Brent opened fire on the couple. Jackson was struck multiple times and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her boyfriend was also wounded but survived the attack.
The investigation quickly pointed to Brent as the primary suspect. According to family, Brent was the father of Jackson's daughter. A search for Brent began, and two days after the shooting, on June 9, 2022, he was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Jackson. Another individual, 28-year-old Vaita Valentine, was also taken into custody and charged with being an accessory after the fact to capital murder for allegedly assisting Brent in his attempt to evade law enforcement.
Following his arrest, Zverian Brent was charged with murder and attempted murder and was denied bond during his initial court appearance. He was later convicted of second-degree murder and aggravated assault for the fatal shooting of Terrencia Jackson and the wounding of her boyfriend. For these crimes, Brent faced a sentence of up to 40 years in prison for the murder charge and an additional 20 years for the assault.
