In the summer of 2022, the life of 15-year-old Johnny Cage, a Black male student at Amanda Elzy High School, was tragically cut short in his Greenwood, Mississippi home. On the morning of June 10th, what began as a planned robbery escalated into a fatal encounter that would deeply affect the community. The subsequent investigation into his death swiftly led to the identification and arrest of three local youths: 19-year-old James Earl Cason, 17-year-old Darius Sims, and 15-year-old Terry
Williams. The gravity of the crime was reflected in the serious charges brought against them, as all three were indicted for capital murder.
The legal proceedings that followed painted a grim picture of the events that transpired. It was revealed that the plan to rob the Cage residence was orchestrated the day before the incident. In a profound betrayal, it came to light that Darius Sims was the victim's stepbrother and had facilitated the crime by intentionally leaving the front door unlocked. When Cason and Williams entered the home, Johnny Cage bravely attempted to intervene and protect his two younger brothers who were also present. During this heroic act, he was fatally shot by James Earl Cason. The community mourned the loss of the young man, holding services at the Leflore County Civic Center to honor his memory.
The pursuit of justice for Johnny Cage culminated in the convictions of all three individuals involved. In August 2025, after a trial that lasted two and a half days, a Leflore County jury found James Earl Cason guilty of capital murder and conspiracy. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Darius Sims, the victim's stepbrother, opted to plead guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder and conspiracy in April 2025 and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The final co-defendant, Terry Williams, also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy in October 2025. His sentence consists of 20 years to serve, followed by supervised probation.
