In the summer of 2022, the life of 43-year-old Frankie Maurice Cathey was tragically cut short in Holly Springs, Mississippi. On Wednesday, July 27, law enforcement received a distressing call from Cathey's mother, which led them to a grim discovery in the Chulahoma area. Upon their arrival at the residence on Highway 309, they found Cathey deceased on his living room couch. It was apparent he had been dead for several hours, having sustained numerous 9mm gunshot wounds to his upper body. The scene was scattered with shell casings, painting a violent picture of his final moments.
The investigation into the shooting quickly gained momentum. Through the collaborative efforts of the sheriff's department, ATF agents, and the U.S. Marshals Service, two suspects were identified. The first, 18-year-old Montrell Leevon Ramsey, was apprehended by the evening of the same day. The second suspect, 22-year-old Dequan Sanchez Hall, was taken into custody in the early hours of the following morning. Both men were charged with capital murder, and a judge denied them bond. The motive behind the violent act was believed to be robbery. During their investigation, law enforcement officers also recovered a 9mm pistol near the scene that was thought to have been discarded by the suspects.
The legal proceedings took another turn when one of the accused, Dequan 'Peewee' Hall, who had been out on bond, made a bid for freedom. He removed his ankle monitor and failed to appear for his trial, prompting a manhunt. His time as a fugitive was brought to an end in August 2023 when he was recaptured by U.S. Marshals. Following his death, Frankie Cathey, who was known to be a barber, was laid to rest on August 14, 2022, at Carter Memorial Cemetery in Senatobia.
